In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
