A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
