The feeling at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season falling apart, or had there never been a thread keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or imploding.
Matteo's Surprising Comeback
At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.
He joined originally when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Finding His Natural Fit
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
